DNS Settings (Domain Name System)

The Internet uses a system which is called DNS to find domain names. There are many good books covering DNS that provide a good understanding of how it works. The information here is aimed to help you get your site up and running.

Every domain available to the Internet has at least one name server (DNS server) associated with it, but usually two are used to allow for one to fail.
There are many Internet-based companies offering registration of domain names. When domains are registered, one piece of information that is always required is the primary and secondary name servers responsible for locating the domain.

Contact the company or your domain name technical support with whom the domain name was originally registered and ask them to change the name servers. These name servers act like addresses for the post office to find the your domain. If you still have your username and password to access your domain name details then you can simply change it yourself.
Registering host records may take several days. When the process is complete your new account will be live.

Enter your domain name below if you do not have your
Domain Name Technical Support details.

FTP

FTP is a program that allows you to transfer your files from your computer to the internet and needs to be done to create your website. There are many free FTP applications available for most platforms.

Get your free SmartFTP download  here.

All FTP programs will require the address, username and a password to gain access. Once your account has been activated these details will be sent to you.
All your files must located in the htdocs directory of your website which is on our server. Your ftp address sent to you upon registration will guide you to your user file.  Make sure to change to the htdocs file before you upload.   Some FTP programs require your destination directory before they start uploading and it is here that you enter htdocs

However please remember that the most common mistake is when your files are not on your website but on your computer.  Your computer will find those files or pictures and work perfectly but the internet will not because it cannot access your computer.

Place your index.html in the htdocs directory for your website to be successful.

Getting your scripts to work.

Change the file ext  to .pl and place them in the cgi-bin in your htdocs folder.

This will automatically run your scripts.

Email

Please make sure that your username is in the form of the email address eg. root@unlimitedwebsitehosting.com when you install your Outlook or other email program on your computer.

(Use blat.exe for your sendmail)

How do I receive and send on the same account?

Use the password and username we have supplied for your incoming mail POP3   eg  mail.yourdomainname.com
When you enter in the details for your SMTP  eg.  mail.xxxxxxxx.com select "my server needs authentication".  A new window will open and you need to insert your dialup username and password to send emails.

The following email info applies only to unlimited email accounts
How does it work?
When an email is sent to your website it goes via a forwarder and into a mailbox. The forwarders control the destination address which route emails to a mailbox or any email address you require.
On your initial set-up a root mailbox and a postmaster and nobody  forwarders are installed as standard..
The forwarder nobody picks up all incoming mail that has not been allocated to anyone else (eg. postmaster) and sends them to its destination address.
Every new account has the destination address for the forwarder nobody set to root)

What happens if you change the root?
Both of the forwarders at the time of set-up are sending the incoming mail to the root address. (you can verify this by going to your Control Panel, Email, then click on either postmaster or nobody and they will both have root as the forwarding address). This means that the root will not receive any incoming emails and the sender of any emails to your site will receive an undeliverable error message.
Avoid removing the mailbox root and the forwarder nobody. If you have done so do not worry because you can just add a new mailbox and name it root and add a forwarder and name it nobody. Do not forget to get nobody to forward its mail to the root mailbox.

How do I set-up a new user?

Create a mailbox and name it after the new user (eg. george) and enter a password.  Then create a forwarder called george and enter in the mailbox forwarder george.
Now George has an email account with his username george@yourdomainname.com and a password associated with it.

How do I set-up the outgoing mail?

Connecting to the internet requires a dialup number or some form of access. They designate a SMTP for sending emails which is specific to your dialup. There are three items which you need and two of them you already have. You should already have an assigned username and password. What you need to do now is contact them via email or their website and acquire the SMTP associated with the dialup phone number or procedure you are using.
If you do not have a username and password for your dialup then you may have to acquire your own dialup.  You can do this by searching the internet for a " ISP " which is located in your area and subscribe to their service and remember to ask them for your SMTP.
If you are unable to find your SMTP you may as a last resort send us the phone company details including the phone number you are dialing and we will help find your SMTP.
